Centerpiece alternatives

December 15, 2011

Ah yes, another reader request. Actually, a bride-to-be request! My favorite! This is what she had to say:

For the love of my sanity! Can you do a post on centerpiece ideas? That don’t cost a million dollars?

Why of course, dah-ling. Of course. Let’s see, there’s…

I l-o-v-e flowers. Love ’em. But I’m really not opposed to doing something different with your centerpieces. Why not! What’s your favorite? I’m a big fan of greenery {love that moss!} and candles {the more the better} and books and fruit. Gosh, I guess I’m a bigger fan than I thought I was!

I am making our own centerpieces using topiaries (got all the supplies at Michael’s for under $10 per topiary) and fake candles from the dollar store. I was worried doing DIY would look cheesy (I am SO not crafty) but everyone I’ve showed them to so far thinks they look store bought! Win!

Mindy, I completely forgot about topiaries! We actually thought about using those for our wedding as well. They’re a really great alternative. Thanks for reminding me {and everyone else!}.

So lovely–it’s hard to say no to flowers, but all these gorgeous centerpieces actually make it pretty easy!

I’m incredibly happy with our centerpieces. I should start off saying we had three long tables, dining hall style. We had tons of hardcover books (collected from our own books, some friends’, and a bunch that we’d gotten for 25 cents a piece at Brown Elephant and promptly re-donated), mason jars with inexpensive-but-lovely flowers (baby’s breath, pussy willows, and baby chamomile), and tin cans with holes punched in them. We borrowed friends’ battery operated “candles” and put those in the cans.

We’d originally planned on using pillar candles on many cake plates, until we were told our venue only allowed candles when they’re surrounded with water and I threw that idea out. (it’s a lovely look, but didn’t fit what we were going for)

Greenery and potted plants are a favorite of mine. I also love incorporating personal elements or items from family members.
